Importance of blues
Jazz and blues are not very old musical
forms, yet they are firmly entrenched as
20th Century North American genre. The
pieces represented in this book, 12-bar
standard blues in slow tempo and 12-bar
standard blues in fast tempo, import the
basic form of blues, that being a
three-phrase period of twelve measures.
The basic framework of I, IV, and V
scale-steps allows for harmonic
elaborations while retaining the
progressively more difficult key signature
found in the book.
ABOUT THE BOOK
This book of blues compositions for piano was
published especially for the young music
student.
The age level specified for each piece equates
roughly to the grade level normally achieved by
this age, and the technical requirements reflect
the standard classical requirements
appropriate to this age including harmony,
dynamics, phrasing, balance, rhythm and key
signature.
The harmony of blues is based on tonic,
subdominant and dominant chord
progressions. The progressively more difficult
key signatures for older students is important
to ensure increased exposure to and familiarity
with accidentals.
While it is important to practice, through
repetition, the techniques necessary to develop
young musical talent, it is also important to
sustain the interest of the young musician.
These blues compositions reinforce all of the
technical skills required in classical music
while offering a refreshingly different musical
experience for the student and listener.
Blues For Piano
Note to teachers
The dynamics, phrasing and groupings
of bars is well-arranged for the student
to easily read and play these pieces.
The fingering is left to the discretion of
the musician, and it is recommended
that the teacher and student work out
appropriate fingering together. Some
experimentation in this regard will only
benefit the student's learning
experience. The pieces are
approximately three minutes in length,
giving the young student exposure to a
full-length contemporary composition.
The pieces are arranged in the book
from easiest to most difficult. The
difficulty of the piece is established by
the key signature as well as other
technical components. Nevertheless,
any of these pieces could be played by
any student having achieved sufficient
skill and proficiency.
